Yulunggu is the name of the Rainbow Snake, or Rainbow Serpent, in the Dreamtime mythology of the Yolngu Native Australian people of Arnhem land of northern Australia.

Yulunggu inhabited deep water pools and was a vast serpent. There is a legend about some sisters named Borlere and Misilgoe who camped by the pool of Yulunggu without realising he was there. They tried to cook on their fire to be able to feed their girl and boy but everything jumped away from them and into the pool. Yulunggu then caused a great flood and the sisters realised something was not right so they started chanting and dancing to try to keep Yulunggu from their children.

Soon they were exhausted and fell asleep by the pool. During the night Yulunggu arose from the water and swallowed them all whole. He went to heaven and started boasting about what he had done, but swallowing humans was not approved and he was told so. Yulunggu then descended back to earth and regurgitated, it is not said if the sisters or their children suffered any ill-effects from their ordeal.

The legend is often re-enacted as part of the traditional puberty rites for young boys and girls.

Tale:

The sisters Borlere and Misilgoe were camping with their children near Yulunggu's lake home, but the food they tried to cook kept jumping back into the water. Yulunggu caused a flood and came for the children, but it wasn't until the sisters collapsed from exhaustion that he succeeded in this meal. But, he boasted of his take in heaven and the other gods told him to take them back, so he did.

Yurlunggur is a genus of fossil snake in the extinct family Madtsoiidae. This genus was a part of the extinct megafauna of Australia, and contains the species Yurlunggur camfieldensis.[2][1]

A large apex predator that seems to have been extant in the region since the Miocene epoch. It is described as one of the Madtsoiidae family, that includes the species such as Wonambi naracoortensis, present in Australia until the Pleistocene.[3]

The name of the genus is derived from traditional name given by the people of Arnhem Land to the Rainbow serpent. They were large snakes, up to 6 metres long and 300 millimetres thick, that are more closely resemble Varanus (Monitors) than small burrowing lizards. John Scanlon has presented this as evidence of descent from the former, rather than burrowing ancestors that evolved into the elongate and legless snakes. The fossil material described by this species includes a rare example of a complete skull and mandible, often crushed in the fossilisation process, that was preserved in the soft limestone of a body of fresh water. This was found at the Riversleigh fossil site in northwest Queensland.[4]

The type locality is Bullock Creek, which occurs on the Camfield bed formations given in the specific epithet.[5]

Bobi-Bobi is a giant snake in the Dreamtime mythology of Australia. It is described as a serpent being that lived in the heavens like the Rainbow Snake.

Bobi-Bobi realised that humans needed more than just water to survive and introduced game to the earth. The humans did not know how to hunt them so he took one of his own ribs and created the first boomerang.

The humans were so pleased with their food and weapon they decided to go through the cloud barrier to visit Bobi-Bobi. They used a boomerang to make a hole and tore into the cloud barrier. Bobi-Bobi was very displeased with their violence and refused to help them any more and left the region completely.

In myths of the Binbinga people of northern Australia, Bobbi-Bobbi was a supernatural being who lived in the heavens in the Dreamtime. He was a huge snake, similar to the Rainbow Snake, and was originally benevolent towards humans. From the heavens he saw that humans needed more than just water to survive, so he created flying foxes for them to catch and eat. When the foxes flew too high for the humans to catch them, Bobbi-Bobbi removed one of his own ribs and gave it to humans who used it as the first ever boomerang.

According to the tradition, some humans were not satisfied with these gifts and anxious to see what heaven looked like. Two men pretended they wanted to open a hole in the sky and thank Bobbi-Bobbi personally. They hurled the rib-boomerang and tore a huge hole in the clouds which startled Bobbi-Bobbi so much that he failed to catch the boomerang which fell back to Earth and killed the foolish men. This was the first time that Death had visited the human race, so Bobbi-Bobbi has remained aloof in heaven ever since, making no more attempts to help humans.
