(Contains transformation, some muscle growth)
Corporal Thomas “Ace” Watson slowly came to from what felt like hibernation. First his fingers moved experimentally, clenching gradually into a light fist then straightening out and even bending them backwards. A few knuckles popped. Thomas groaned as he tried to rouse the rest of his body to life. He could feel how tightly his muscles were pulling even without much movement and his joints felt like they were desperately in need of greasing, like the rusty joints on the undercarriage of a jeep. His eyes flickered open. Immediately he grunted and had to close them as bright light stabbed into his sockets, aggravating his already growing headache.
“Ugh….shit that hurts…..must have been one hell of party,” he muttered to himself, realizing that he was probably just feeling the typical wakeup call of a killer hangover. This had to have been the worst he’d ever experienced. It was worse than the hangover he’d gotten after a night of downing scotch in a bomb crater with his squad after surviving the landings on Normandy beach. In the morning he’d woken up with a half drunk bottle stuffed down the front of his pants and a grenade in his boot, thankfully not live. The Corporal tried to think about what he’d been celebrating this time, but not surprisingly his brain couldn’t come up with anything but another pounding throb. Jeep, Thomas thought to himself again. Jeep, jeep, jeep…why is that sticking? Thinking back to when he’d compared his aching joints to a rusted jeep had tripped something in the back of his mind. There was a memory there somewhere trying to work its way through the booze, but he couldn’t get it yet.
An irritating itch settled in on Ace’s upper right arm. This wasn’t an unusual occurrence considering that his olive green army duds were made out of what felt like the most rigid, scratchy, and uncomfortable material the army could possibly find. Trenches, mud, bullets, and the stench of death weren’t enough. They had to make you uncomfortable in your own clothes too. The corporal ignored it at first as he tried to open his eyes again and get them to focus, but he still was having a hard time dealing with the amount of sunlight shining on his face. He was starting to see a little better. The itch eventually became too much for him to ignore any longer. Ace muttered a curse in annoyance and reached for his right arm with his left. His hand was stopped dead. Something was wrapped tightly around his wrist and keeping him from moving it more than a few inches.
“The hell?” Thomas reached with his other hand to free up his left then found that his right hand was bound as well. It felt like rope. Irritated and certain that his buddies had probably pulled a prank on him while he was passed out. Ace tried to stand up, but found his legs had the same problem as his arms. They were tied down. “What did those assholes do now?” Ace forced his eyes open. Now the light wasn’t so blinding and he found that he could focus better, although he still felt dazed.
The first thing he noticed is that the light trying to blind him wasn’t sunlight. It was coming from a bright overhead light lamp dangling a few feet above him and aimed right at his upper body. Above that he could see a ceiling made of concrete. Parts of the concrete had busted away revealing the rebar that was typically placed inside concrete to strengthen it. The cracks were recent. Judging by how clean the concrete looked Ace figured he was inside a fairly newly constructed structure of some sort. Tipping his head up to look around, Thomas noticed that he was in a medium sized room with walls also made of concrete. Beyond his feet was a steel, reinforced door. I’m in a bunker? Looking around more he noticed metal utility cabinets lining the walls along with wooden tables that were piled high with papers, books, and what looked like chemistry equipment. Beside him was a small metal table with several empty syringes piled up on it along with a few beakers that were still half filled with a clear liquid. The room looked like some sort of infirmary room or maybe like an OR surgery room. Did I get hurt? Thomas had been in a hospital once before after taking a bullet to the leg but he couldn’t recall seeing any patients being strapped to their beds. That’s also when the corporal noticed he was tied to a wooden table and not a bed. He still believed that he was involved in some sort of gag, but Ace also felt a small pang of concern in his gut.
“Jeep,” Thomas said aloud as the memory finally worked its way up to a place in his memory where he could remember it. He hadn’t been drinking, he’d been on patrol. Thomas had been riding along in the rear seat alongside a private who he didn’t know. Up front had been his sergeant and his best pal Corporal Jimmy “Slim” Carlson. It was near enemy lines, but there wasn’t supposed to be any enemy activity in the area they were driving around. He remembered talking to the private about where he was from when he heard the crack of a rifle and the warm splatter of the sergeant’s blood on his face. The sergeant’s foot pressed down on the accelerator while Slim tried to get control of the jeep. It struck a boulder on the side of the trail and flipped over, tossing the private and Thomas onto the road. Thomas remembered blacking out then waking up to the sight of the jeep overturned and Slim’s lifeless arm sticking out from under it. The private was still alive beside him, though he was nursing his broken leg and whimpering to himself. Thomas had tried to rise but his body wouldn’t respond. The next thing he saw was three soldiers walking out of the trees armed with rifles and an MP-40. They muttered to each other in German. One wore a cap with a colonel’s eagle on it while the two other soldiers were just grunts like him. The officer pointed at the private and barked out an order to the man with the submachine gun. He nodded in response. The man leveled his gun at the private and ignored his pleas for mercy before emptying several shots into his body, silencing him. Thomas knew he was next. The officer walked up and stood over top of him, sneering. He looked at the solider with the rifle and issued another order. Thomas, unable to move, contented himself with spitting on the colonel’s boot then gradually lifting the middle finger on his right hand. The officer merely responded with a malicious smile. Thomas saw the solider raise his rifle and bring the butt of the wooden stock down on his face.
Oh shit….. Thomas wasn’t naïve enough to believe that he’d survived and been found by his comrades. He’d been captured. The confirmation came when he looked behind his head and saw hanging on the concrete was a large blood red flag that bore a white circle. Inside the circle was the black twisted shape of the swastika, the symbol of the Nazi regime. Oh well that’s just wonderful. Thomas took another look at the room around him and decided that this was likely not an infirmary and he realized that his “hangover” was likely due to being drugged, which would explain the spent syringes. More than likely he was strapped down in some Gestapo interrogation room. I’ve got to get the hell out of here before those goose-stepping ghouls come in here looking to stick me with a branding iron or whatever it is they do. Thomas looked at the ropes again. They were frayed by age and had likely been used before. He shuddered to think about whatever poor saps had found themselves tied down to this table before awaiting their turn with the Gestapo interrogator. Grunting, he pulled upwards with his arms hoping that by some stroke of luck he’d be able to just snap the ropes. Not surprisingly his hands stopped dead and the ropes resisted the force. Still he kept straining against them, his face turning red with effort.
“Coooommmeee….oooonnnnn,” he groaned, sputtering for breath and sending a gob of spit to end up on his dirt stained shirt. Thomas was about to give up when he felt a sudden burst of energy course through him, causing his muscles to tense as if he’d just been shocked. He grunted in surprise. Suddenly the ropes holding his arms down snapped as easily as he could break a strand of yarn. Ace sat up slowly, surprised by his own strength. “Huh….and here I thought all those boring patrols and no action was making me soft.”
Knowing he couldn’t waste time sitting around, Thomas reached for the ropes around his legs and tore those apart as well. It hadn’t taken the slightest effort. He slid his legs off the side of the table and stood up. Ace groaned a bit, feeling his spine pop a bit. His muscles still ached from being thrown from a jeep, though they still felt energized. The corporal could hardly feel that he had limbs at all and noticed how light his body felt now. As he stretched his arms, he also noted that his uniform for some reason felt a lot tighter than it should and he actually heard a few seams pop. Thomas again kept himself from sitting and pondering about this considering his situation. He decided it was time to make his escape.
“Oh the boys are going to love to hear this story when I get back.”
Ace noticed a short knife resting on the table by the door. He silently wished his luck with the weak rope would continue and that perhaps a careless guard would have left his Luger or maybe even a rifle sitting around somewhere, but a knife was better than nothing. At least it would be silent if he needed to use it. Ideally he’d come across that bastard colonel and he could put the knife in his throat before he left. Thomas picked up the knife and reached for the door knob. Suddenly his still aggravating headache surged up, feeling like he’d taken another hit by that rifle butt. Thomas didn’t even manage to make a sound as he fell to the floor again nearly unconscious from the pain, his eyes shut tight and hands pressed against his head. He wanted nothing more than to scream, but knew he couldn’t alert his captors. As quickly as it had started it was over. Cautiously Thomas opened his eyes and found himself looking out at an entirely different world. Everything had gone black and white
“I…what…..what the…..” Thomas blinked a few times and rubbed his eyes hard with the heels of his hands. The colors hadn’t changed. His world had suddenly gone to a vivid array of black, white and grey colors. Thomas also found that everything seemed so much more detailed to point that he was seeing details he couldn’t have noticed before, such as the individual pores in the concrete walls or slight layer of moisture on the ceiling. “What’s going on?” Still looking around in surprise, Thomas glanced towards the door and got another surprise. Two great blobs of yellow, orange, and red appeared on either side of the door. Thomas backed up and stared trying to figure out what was causing the door to appear like it was on fire. Suddenly one blob moved. Ace heard voices speaking in German on the other side of the steel door. Are those people? I’m seeing them through the wall. He still couldn’t figure out what he was seeing of the two guards though because he couldn’t see them physically, just their shape. Then for some reason Thomas thought about something he’d read in science fiction books back home and articles about certain animals that could only see body heat. I’m looking at their body heat. Damn. Well that’s pretty damn cool. Freaky as hell but still….very cool. What the hell is happening to me? What did they do to me while I was out?
Ace knew he couldn’t spend time wondering about his new vision change. The Germans weren’t likely to leave him be for very long and he’d rather them not find him wandering around his cell loose. Still escape from the room wasn’t looking very likely either. With both guards standing right outside the door, and likely armed with submachine guns, Thomas wasn’t going to have a shot at just waltzing out the door. He muttered a curse to himself as his hopes were dashed. The room seemed stiflingly hot all of the sudden and a bead of sweat ran down his forehead and into his right eye. Ace blinked a few times and rubbed his eye with the heel of his hand. That’s when he noticed something. Even with his eyes closed while he was trying to get rid of the sweat, Ace could still see the soldiers’ body shapes outlined by their heat. He could still see without actually having to see. An idea quickly formed. It was going to be tricky, but he’d have the advantage.
Keeping the small knife clutched tightly in his fist, Ace reached up for the light switch next to the door and turned it plunging the room into a perfect darkness with the only remaining light being a small sliver sneaking under the door. Despite the black, the corporal could still see the two guards as clearly as before. He grinned. This might just work out yet….but I’ve still got to take them both down alone. Not having any other options Ace acted out the next step of his plan. He lightly knocked on the steel door. Immediately both guards turned to look at the door. The heat in their chests increased. It had been an unexpected sound and had triggered a small tremor of surprise, thus the temperature change. Damn this is really cool. This’ll give me a nice edge on dates, being able to read moods and all. Getting his focus back onto the matter at hand, Ace silently moved away from the door and ducked under the steel table just to the right of the door. He really didn’t want to kill the soldiers. If it’s possible he might be able to just sneak right out the door and lock both goons inside to stumble around in the dark. At the same time though, leaving them alive meant they might raise alarms.
“Wer ist hier?” a voice said from outside the door. One guard knocked on the door trying to get a response. Ace could see the cold outline of the gun against his lit up body. It was easy to make out the distinct shape of an MP-40. The other guard was likely armed the same. Knife versus a submachine gun….yeah this was a great idea, Ace, just freaking brilliant. “Antworte mir!” the solider ordered. Naturally Ace didn’t obey. One guard looked to the other. “Öffne die Tür und behalte sie im Auge. Ich werde mich um den Gefangenen kümmern.”
The other guard muttered a response and produced a set of keys from his pocket that he used to unlock the door. Ace could hear the individual locks and the other mechanisms of the lock clicking. He could hear the soldiers’ breathing. Even his own heartbeat sounded like a deafening drum being beaten violently enough to the point that his ears started to hurt. Ace rubbed his ears a bit, trying to clear the noise. The young solider felt a deep queasy feeling deep in his gut. At first he thought it was just nerves acting up but then he realized he hadn’t had a case of the butterflies since getting off the beaches at Normandy and watching nearly all of his platoon cut down by machine gun fire. This wasn’t nerves. It felt like he’d eaten a double helping of his mom’s famous tuna casserole that was renowned in his family for causing bathroom all-nighters seated atop the toilet. Ace could almost hear his insides roiling, twisting up inside him. It felt like he had something alive inside moving around, crawling through his innards. That mental image nearly made him upchuck. Ace bit back the bile moving up his throat and refocused himself. Come on….come on….come on in Gerry….nothing to be nervous about, Thomas thought to himself, gripping the knife tightly in his right hand and clenching his other into a fist.
The door creaked open on rusty hinges, screaming in protest as many people who’d been held in this room had while they’re fingernails were plucked out and their flesh branded. Light immediately surged through the gap as the door opened, pouring into the shadow. Even though there was light shining right on him beneath the table, the soldier’s vision hadn’t changed. The world was still an detailed array of blacks, greys, whites, and the heat of the soldiers. Ace worried for a moment that he’d be spotted with the sliver of light right on him. He crept back farther away from the door but still under the cover of the table. Luckily for him the two guards hadn’t thought to check around before entering.
One guard entered first, likely the lowering ranking one of the two. With them now standing in front of him and not behind a wall, Thomas could see how they looked yet still saw the burning colors of their body heat. The first solider to enter was a private wearing the standard long grey trench coat styled uniform that was common amongst guards along with a standard infantry helmet. Emblazoned on his shoulder was a single chevron. He tightly clutched the MP-40 in his grimy hands and his eyes searched the darkness anxiously. Behind him a sergeant entered wearing similar attire except for the amount of chevrons on his shoulder showing his rank. Ace could tell both men were confused and nervous, not expecting to find a dark room behind the door with nobody there. Got ‘em antsy now…..damn they reek. Thomas’ nose curled at the pungent odor. It wasn’t exactly a stench, at least not a type that he could recall, instead it seemed to reinforce his point that they were afraid.
“Such' nach den Lichtern!” the sergeant ordered the private who nodded in compliance without remark. He walked further into the room going completely through the door. The sergeant followed behind.
That’s it….just a little further…. Only the sergeant standing with one foot still in the doorway was keeping Ace from getting out. He might have to fight his way past him quickly before the private managed to locate the light switch which was thankfully on the other side of the open door. Ace clenched the knife tighter. He then felt several sharp pains inside the palm of his other hand which was still clenched into a fist. Glancing quickly Thomas saw blood oozing out form between his fingers. He’d tightened his fist too tightly and his nails had cut his flesh. The private said something to the sergeant, apparently having trouble locating the switch in the near darkness. In turn the sergeant muttered a curse and stepped in to help, taking his foot out of the doorway. Thomas seized his opportunity. Swiftly he slid out from under the table, bumping his head in the process and sending anything that had been sitting atop the table to the floor creating a ruckus that drew both soldiers’ attentions. Quicker than Ace even knew he could move, he stabbed the sergeant in the back of his calf just as he was turning. With his tendon severed, the sergeant fell to the cold floor screaming in pain, clutching at his leg. Thomas lept to his feet. The private came out from behind the door with gun ready but couldn’t squeeze a shot off before Ace had slammed the door shut behind him, throwing himself out into the hallway.
Breathing heavily, Ace took a moment to recover and marvel at his luck. The private pounded on the door screaming for help while his sergeant continued to cry over his wounded calf. He didn’t’ have long to relax though as he suddenly heard the click of an action being drawn back and the tink of a bullet being loaded into the firing chamber. Without knowing what he was doing exactly, Ace threw himself along the floor to the opposite wall of the hallway, barely being missed by the hail of bullets that blew apart a chunk of the concrete wall. Ace pushed off from that wall and stood up, using his momentum to throw himself down the hall towards the soldier, actually flying through the air partially and landing on his feet. The German fought to dump the spent clip out of his gun. Ace didn’t give him the chance as he slapped the gun out of the man’s hands then drove his other fist into his face, knocking the shocked German off his feet. He landed limp as a doll. The front of his face appeared deformed, partially staved in at the eye socket. Ace stood over the body of soldier, breathing hard, his teeth gritted. Then he came back as the adrenaline left him, and he stood in wonder over what he’d just pulled off. Shit….did I do that? That’s when he noticed the arm of the German that he’d slapped to get the gun away. There were several vertical slices on his wrist and lower forearm. Blood seeped from the ragged tears in the uniform. The hell did that to him? A animal or something? Thomas glanced at his hand and his eyes widened when he saw that on the ends of his fingertips were long nails, claws each about an inch long. His other hand was the same. That had been why he’d started bleeding when he’d made a fist. What….what….I don’t understand…..what the hell did they do to me!!!
“Hier lang! Alarm auslösen! Schnell!” voices screamed from down the hallway further in the direction that Ace had come from.
He didn’t have time to sit and figure out why he’d grown claws like one of his house cats back home. Obviously he couldn’t go the way that the soldiers were coming from. Ace didn’t know where to go. For all he knew he could be somewhere deep inside enemy lines in a bunker or some secret lab with a thousand some soldiers waiting to use him for target practice. Or he could be just a few yards away from the exit. He needed to know which way lead outside. Suddenly he found himself sniffing the air, catching a fresh waft of air untainted by the musty cramped odor of the bunker hallway. It came from a stretch of hall that led off to his left. Ace sprinted down the hallway. The walls gradually started to show more signs of water corrosion and other signs of the climate wearing at the bunker concrete. He was getting closer to the exit. I was sniffing the air….sniffing the air?! And….and seeing heat? And now I’ve got claws? This day really couldn’t get any stranger. As he ran, Ace could feel his insides cramping up painfully now making every breath more painful. It was as if his lungs didn’t have room to expand. He began to feel something in his throat, like he’d choked down a bite too large. The bulge actually began to constrict his air flow to the point that he had to stop to catch his wind again. Ace leaned up against the wall, gasping and clutching with both hands at his stomach which had tightened painfully. Beneath his hand he could feel something writhing inside him, causing the cramps to become even more intense.
Ace couldn’t see that inside of him his organs were undergoing a change, becoming both larger and also shifting somewhat. Also, a few new organs were forming, specifically an extra pair of lungs in the base of his throat, one roughly a third the size of a regular lung while its partner was even smaller. Feeling his neck to see what the blockage was, the corporal’s hand brushed over the bulge just as it seemingly sunk into his neck out of sight and touch. It hadn’t gone away, rather his neck and torso were actually starting to thicken to make room for his enlarged internals. As he breathed his olive green t-shirt pulled tightly over his torso which was unusual since when he’d gotten his duds they’d been baggy. GI uniforms usually came in a universal one size fits all form.
Thomas was suddenly seized from behind and shoved onto his face on the dusty floor. He’d been too focused on his pains to notice the soldier that had snuck up on him and now had him pinned against the floor. Ace groaned, coughing on the dust he’d inhaled. The soldier dug his knee into his back and was trying to get his hands pinned behind his back as well. A surge of anger coursed through the young corporal, guiding him into action as it had before during his escape. He rolled himself over so that he lay on his back, facing up at the German. The Nazi had been taken off balance by Ace’s sudden maneuver. He recovered quickly though, his teeth bared in anger and his hand raised ready to strike. Anger rapidly changed to a terrified expression, though, as he looked into Ace’s face. Thomas didn’t waste a moment to notice. Acting on instinct he opened his mouth, feeling something building up in his throat like a pent up breath that needed to be exhaled. His throat felt hot. That heat turned to a burning sensation that bubbled up towards his mouth quickly. A moment later a gout of fire, as great as any flamethrower, erupted from his gaping mouth and spewed into the frightened German’s face. The man screamed and threw himself backwards off of Ace. His face hadn’t caught fire, but the flesh had been severely burned. The material of the uniform, however, had easily ignited. The tortured man’s entire upper torso was soon consumed by red fire that ate at his flesh. Ace couldn’t believe what had just happened. Horrified by the man’s screams, he scrambled to get away. The hallway continued on for a few more yards before turning right once more and leading to a slightly open steel door. It was the exit. Ace felt hope surging up inside of him. I’m going to make it….I’m going to make it! Suck on that one you bastards. Thomas started to sprint towards the door way. He was stopped dead in his tracks as his spine broke in his back throwing him off his feet and back onto the floor.
“Agh!!” the soldier cried out, grabbing at his back and writhing on the floor, unable to get back to his feet again. Beneath his hand he could feel his backbone actually moving around, twisting and shifting as if there were a snake sewed in beneath his skin looking for a way to slither out. It was agonizing. Not only had that but his backbone had begun to stretch. As the corporal lay screaming on the floor, his body was slowly elongating. His shirt started to rise up gradually exposing his torso inch by inch until it looked like he’d gotten a shirt and jacket a size too small. He felt a piercing pain at his tailbone. A moment later he heard a ripping sound. Forcing himself to glance over his back he was horrified to see a tail protruding from his rear and getting longer by the moment. “Gah what….what’s happening to me?! Those…those Nazi bastards….did this…to me. I gotta get out of here.”
With his tail still slowly growing longer, but his spine done growing for now, Ace was able to get back onto his feet and reach the door. He quickly noticed though that the door frame appeared to be smaller than normal. It didn’t take him long to realize that the door wasn’t smaller. He’d grown. Ace now stood just slightly taller than the doorway, making it necessary for him to duck to get through. He threw open the door and was met with the cool rush of the night air and the faint light of the moon above. All around the bunker entrance were thick trees and undergrowth. Hearing shouts getting closer behind him, the corporal got himself outside and slammed the steel door behind him. Searching around frantically for something to bar the door, Thomas noticed that there was hooks on the door and a heavy steel bar lying beside it. The door also opened outwards. The Germans had obviously built this bunker to be secure from the outside but also to lock it up from the outside as well to keep anything from getting out. Ace guessed that he wasn’t the only experiment they’d worked on in this bunker. He grabbed the steel bar and found it to be extremely light, not heavier than the boots on his feet. Ace dropped the bar into place just as several bodies slammed into it from the other side. He heard several angry curses in German tongue as the soldiers realized they’d been locked inside. The corporal could see the body heat of at least five soldiers trying to ram the door down with their bodies in vain.
Thomas knew it was unlikely that their weren’t other guards around somewhere patrolling outside the bunker, but he found himself paralyzed by a new round of agonizing pain as his transformation went into overdrive. Sweat coated his body like too much wet paint on a wall, thick and running freely down his body and limbs. The corporal heard stitches popping on his uniform. His jacket was becoming too constrictive on him as it was made of a stouter material than his olive green t-shirt. Ace managed to work his arms out of the jacket and let it fall off his body. With it off he managed to get a great look at his torso. Thomas could see muscle definition clearly now which is something he’d never been able to do before. In fact, his chest had bulked up enough that tears had appeared in the seam work on the sides of the shirt. It was drenched with his sweat.
Ace’s new tail flicked around behind him frantically as he had almost no control over its motions at the moment. He soon found himself scratching at his skin all over. It had started as an inconvenient itch on his arm but now the corporal was practically tearing at his skin with his claws to try and relieve it. He noticed that his claws were carving in his skin, creating bloody gouges, but mostly he didn’t care. The blood felt hot against his skin. It felt like it was almost burning his flesh like he’d just held a blow torch to his skin. A few curls of steam flowed off of it as it came into contact with the night air.
Ace felt his body aching, throbbing painfully and only adding to his misery as he continued to scratch his skin away. He stumbled forwards down a dirt trail that lead into the forest. He figured either the trail would lead him back to where he could maybe find Allied soldiers or it was going to head him right into enemy territory, if he wasn’t there already. Either way he didn’t care.
“I gotta get….get back to base….maybe….maybe they’ll know what to….do,” Thomas grunted, finding speech difficult. His voice sounded deeper and raspy like he’d been gargling gravel. It hurt to talk. He didn’t know what he was hoping to fix by going to the medics since they were accustomed to bullet wounds and blown off limbs, not claws or fire breathing. Ace rubbed at his throat, gulping, and then automatically started to scratch at his neck. Ace felt blood running down his hand. He’d cut his own neck with his claws. Cursing at himself for nearly slicing his jugular, Thomas looked at the hand he’d scratched with and had a sudden bout of queasiness. Dark red blood covered his entire hand. It had run down his forearm as well, dripping off his arm and onto his boot. Ace rubbed at the blood on his hand, trying to smear away some of it. The blood did wipe away, but that wasn’t all that peeled off. Ace gaped as he watched his own flesh being scrubbed away with the blood, flaking away like dandruff. Beneath the skin that had fallen was a layer of dark, almost black, flesh. He thought he’d just torn his skin down to the muscle. After a closer look, though, Thomas noticed that the skin had formed a strange pattern on it. “What is that….is that….scales?”
Sure enough Thomas found that the new layer of skin wasn’t skin at all, instead it was a coating of black scales dyed red with blood. In other areas where he’d scratched and cut at his flesh Ace found other patches of scales showing. Am I turning into a god damn fish? The itching intensified to a searing pain. He suddenly felt like he was wearing a set of clothes that was two sizes too small and wanted nothing better than to crawl out of his constrictive flesh. Ace tried to resist for now, focusing on getting one foot in front of the other.
He continued to head down the worn dirt path deeper into the forest until he was out of site of the bunker entrance. All around him the forest was alive. He could see all the heat signatures of the birds in the trees above him as well as the various animals keeping hidden in the shrubs or beneath the ground. It was incredible. Ace could smell them too. Off to his right somewhere he smelled a musky scent and immediately was able to identify it as a deer. The sounds of the forest were sharp to his ears. He could hear the rustling of the leaves from far away as a squirrel clambered up to higher branches. Thomas took a moment to stop and marvel at how clear the world seemed around him now. That’s when he heard a strange creak from his body. It was coming from his bones.
“Oh shit not again….ARGH!!” There was resisting or stopping the transformation this time. Ace’s entire skeletal structure started to shift into a new shape. Ace leaned up against a tree to support himself. Gradually his limbs started to lengthen, starting with his arms and then his legs as well. Thomas found himself rising higher until he stood at least a foot taller than he had after his last growth spurt. Now the itch all over his body was impossible to ignore any longer. Ace fell onto the ground, scratching at himself frantically to try and rid himself of the irritation. Piece by piece he tore apart his flesh revealing larger patches of scales beneath the skinned areas. Blood had stopped flowing from the torn patches now. Ace couldn’t get at the skin beneath his shirt so he proceeded to tear it off as well which took little effort with his long claws. Next he stripped off his pants shred by shred until the soldier lay naked on the dirt and drenched in sweat that caused a layer of dirt to cling to his body. The last few fragments of skin to strip away were on his face. He’d tried to avoid it but couldn’t do it anymore. Seizing both cheeks with his claws, Ace screamed aloud and pulled off his face and cast it aside. At last the burn had gone.
The corporal’s entire body had lost any human features except for the general shape. Black scales, with a shimmery emerald tint, had completely replaced his flesh leaving him with an armored hide that he found even his claws couldn’t graze. Even though they were tough his scales were not rigid. Ace found that moving wasn’t a problem. Although with his overly long limbs and stretched body Thomas found himself unable to get back onto his feet. The best he could manage was to roll around helplessly on his back like a turtle that had been unlucky enough to be flipped. He even attempted to use his tail to help sit himself up but he still didn’t have any control over the limb. His tail was now as long as his legs, and a sudden pain along the length of his spine told him it wasn’t done growing. Inch by inch it grew longer and thicker with muscle. His antic thrashing around earlier had allowed the ground to tear his tail clean of skin as well leaving it covered in the same thick coating of glimmering scales. Ace noticed that the scales covering his chest were different. These were much more green in color and felt softer, more leathery, probably to allow for greater movement. Ace really couldn’t give it much more than a few random thoughts due to being in shock in seeing his body covered in scales like something out of a science book he’d studied in biology class. “I’m turning into a lizard?! A fire breathing lizard?! Wait…no…not a lizard…..” The word dragon sprang to mind. Ace had read enough fantasy books during his early teen years to recognize that he was beginning to share more and more traits with the giant creatures of legend.
“Ugh….here we go again….” Ace groaned, not bothering to brace for the next round of changes, at this point just wanting to get whatever was going to happen done as quickly as possible. After his limbs had stretched, the corporal’s muscles had become far overstretched to the point of tearing if he’d tried to move them more than a few inches. A burn had built up deep in his muscle tissue. Grunting, Ace leaned up and looked down at his body. His chest had started to push outwards, his pecs throbbing outwards an inch at a time until his abs were hidden from view. The scales stretched easily over the new muscle mass. Ace ran his hands down to his ab muscles and found that were there had originally only been the slightest trace of definition, now there was an eight pack slowly building up. Each ab swelled larger until his scales were pulled tightly over them. He could easily feel the ridges that separated each one, like canyons between mountains.
While Thomas was feeling around he got a good view of his arms beginning to expand as well. First his biceps bulged, veins throbbing visibly across them even through the scale coat. Every pump of his strong heart caused the muscle to engorge itself further until each bicep rivaled a basketball then continued to expand to near beach ball proportion. With how long his arms were, though, the size suited him well. Next his triceps grew to further round out his arm with impressive muscle definition bigger than anything Ace had ever seen before. Thomas managed to sit upright, holding his hands out in front of him and watching the growth reach his forearms. Once his forearms had built up as well, Ace found himself gaping at his powerful arms, even flexing somewhat.
Ace’s legs weren’t going to be left behind. Their growth started at the thigh and quad muscles, bulging up large enough to support the new mass of his upper body and provide strength enough to split rock with a single kick. Thick chords of muscle swelled large enough that their definition showed through the scales, each individual muscles trying to outgrow its neighbors until Ace boasted legs as thick as an average tree trunk. His calf muscles developed rapidly along with his upper legs. Once they’d finished growing they were roughly equivalent in size to his forearms, that being a circumference comparable to the larger branches on the tree beside him.
Last to develop were the muscles across his back and neck. Ace could feel the tendons that lined his neck straining, swelling, along with the muscle there. It slowly engulfed his neck until it appeared that his head was sitting directly atop his shoulders, which were rising up from the sides and rear like hills. Once that growth had completed Thomas’ shoulders had a definite triangular shape to them. The general shape of his torso was triangular as well with his shoulders being broad while his hips were narrower. Ace had a build that any of his more physical training obsessed comrades would happily kill for. Getting a feel for his new strength and ease of movement, the corporal gradually got himself up to stand, being careful not to trigger any new spurts of pain. Once he was back on his feet Ace allowed himself another moment to admire his physique. The reprieve was brief however.
Ace felt a shearing pain along the inside ends of his feet that made it painful for him to remain standing, but he fought back the discomfort and tried to see what was happening to his mutated body now. Glancing down past his pec muscles, Thomas saw that everything seemed normal. That is until he saw that each big toe seemed to be a bit farther away from the rest than normal. Another stab of pain in each foot confirmed that something was happening. He immediately noticed that his big toes were farther off the insides of his feet and the distance was increasing. Each toe was shifting position, swiveling inwards from his feet while also sliding back. It certainly seemed like the strangest thing he’d ever seen or felt, but when compared to everything else that had happened to him in the last ten minutes it seemed insignificant. No point in complaining. Just let it happen he told himself. The toes continued moving along and were now at his arches, still moving back towards his heels. Meanwhile Ace saw blood oozing out from the tips of his toe nails. He wasn’t surprised to see black talons poking out from beneath the old nails and growing larger until finally his toenails fell off, giving way to the newly formed black claws. Each one had to have measure at least three inches long if they were straightened out. Unlike the claws on his fingertips, these claws more closely resembled meat hooks, meant for grasping. At last his big toes had reached their final destination. The bone that had traveled with the toe reconnected itself to his ankle bone so that it protruded backwards off his feet, also growing a long talon, though not nearly as large as the others.
Ace felt his feet crackling again, the bones popping and stretching in length. Both feet started to get longer. His ankle bones popped audibly, sounding like two rocks being cracked together and drawing yet another cry of pain from the corporal. His cries, when he did let one out, had become less human and more……beast like. The boyish tone with the occasional squeak had changed to a deep grumble. His ankles rose up higher off the ground while his arches lengthened enough to nearly double the size of his feet. At the pad of his feet, where his toes were, real leathery pads had developed. Now his feet were no longer feet, but paws with all of his body weight resting on his toes and the ends of his feet. Thomas took a few cautious steps and found himself completely at the mercy of his transformed feet, nearly falling with every staggering unbalanced step. He didn’t want to end up in the dirt again so he opted to stand still until he could figure out how to keep upright. Thomas examined his new paws and shrugged. Well….on the bright side I won’t ever have to worry about what size of boot I need.
“Well is all d….*crack*….ACK!...nope…guess not….” Ace’s face popped again, his jaw locking up and then snapping when he tried to scream from the sudden burst of pain erupting across his face. It felt like he’d taken a face full of shrapnel. Crying out only made things worse so he bottled it up. Automatically after the next sharp crack, Ace’s hand flew to his face and grabbed hold, applying pressure to try and relieve the pressure. It didn’t feel like a broken bone, it felt like his skull was trying to explode, to push outwards. Actually his guess was pretty spot on. The crackling intensified. It had spread all across the front of his face, although it was more focused in his upper and lower mandibles along with the bone of his nose. Above his eyes Ace could feel those parts of his skull creaking too, shifting. Finally when he felt that he could take no more of the painful popping of bone, the front of the corporal’s skull fractured into hundreds of tiny bone shards that then started to grind against each other as they were forced to move and transform. With his jaw in pieces, his silence was broken and the soldier roared in agony, trying to hold together his busted face with his hands. Touch wasn’t helping. The bone shards healed back together finally right before they busted again. It was a process of breaking, shifting, stretching, healing, then breaking again. All of this was happening in a cycle that took no more than a few seconds to complete each time, but the process was long an agonizing. Ace’s hands were slowly being pushed away from his face as his jaws pushed out, elongating into a new shape. His nose was moving outwards along with his jaws. While that was happening his brow had changed as well, lowering over his eyes and becoming more sharply angled. His skull was lengthening as well so that instead of the more typical sphere shape of a human skull, it had acquired the longer shape of an animal, or in his case a reptile. Thomas felt sharp protrusions in his mouth then felt blood oozing out of his lips around his hands that were still clasped over his mouth, which was no longer exactly a mouth. His dull human teeth were being replaced with the long curved fangs of a predator used to stripping meat from bone. A final spurt of stretching grew his new muzzle out to roughly a foot in length accompanied by a deafening crack. The new bone solidified, along with the rest of the skull.
Truly now all vestiges of human resemblance had been consumed by the corporal’s transformation into a mythical creature of legend. Whatever the Nazis had done to him had completely erased all traces of Corporal Thomas “Ace” Watson and replacing it with scales, muscle, claws, and fangs. He remained standing on two feet like any human, but Ace would have towered over the tallest man standing at roughly nine feet tall now. The human shape of his skull had been destroyed in the transformation as well, instead becoming sharper and more angled with a long muzzle filled with fangs. Two black slits on the end marked what had been his nose. Two curls of smoke trailed from them. Even his eyes had changed to a bright predatory green that glowed in the darkness of the forest. His body had become a powerful figure of bulk and tendons that gave him the strength to tear a tank apart with his bare scaly hands. The faint stream of moonlight coming through the trees glinted off of his scales, bringing out the emerald hue of his armor coat of scales. Ace looked like a true dragon except for one thing.
“If I’m going to be a dragon now,” his grumbled to himself, his voice deep and resonating, “shouldn’t I get wings or something? Every dragon has wings!”
As if in response to his desire, the dragon felt two lumps beginning to protrude from his back. It was painful, but not as bad as the rest of the transformation had been. This time he wanted it to happen. Come on…just a little more. Ace’s body jerked forward as two new limbs erupted from his muscular back, reaching up towards the sky, each one nearly as long as he was tall. Suddenly towards the ends of the limbs, fingers split away from the main part then lengthened out and became splayed. A green membrane quickly filled the space in between the lengthy fingers. Finally the transformation was complete and Ace found himself happily testing his two new wings.
“Well I’ll be damned….would ya get a load of me,” he continued to talk to himself, admiring his majestic and beastly body. “Guess I owe Jerry a little thank you. At least I won’t have to try to explain this story when I get back to base….it’ll kinda tell itself.”
Back down the trail in the direction he’d come from, Ace could hear German soldiers approaching, their boots thumping loudly against the dirt trail and the distinct sound of a sergeant barking orders to his command. They were looking for their escaped experiment.
“Time to put these new wings to the test,” Ace told himself, flexing his wings and preparing for flight. He’d never flown an aircraft in his life and now he’d have to fly himself. The dragon was already picturing himself splattering against a tree or cliff. He sighed. “I knew I should have taken that flight course back at base.” With that last thought, the corporal roared and leapt upwards through the canopy of trees and into the night sky, out of sight of the German soldiers. Seemingly on instinct, his wings spread open and caught the air, keeping the dragon aloft. Huh….well that worked a lot better than I’d thought it would. I’ll give those RAF pilots a run for their money once I get the hang of this. That is if they don’t shoot me down on sight. Now…..uh….which way is home?

It's a monster.
No, It's some new attraction!
Dragon breeder
