+ | This short study has many fathers. My fascination with dragons goes back several decades and probably started with the dragon Smaug in The Hobbit (the book version, and not his rather embarrassingly dim-witted counterpart in the movie), grew further upon encountering the dragons of medieval literature, such as the Beowulf dragon, and found unexpected food for thought with the dragon-lore of central Switzerland (especially Lucerne). All these aspects are reflected, one way or another, in the following pages.I also owe a great debt to a multitude of people – scholars, fellow dragonologists and laypeople alike – who discussed dragon matters with me, read parts of my text in various draft forms, provided feedback and inspiration, | ||
